A disc of stone or wood, cut thin enough for light to pass through, with a crown of light escaping behind it. Switched on it does not look like a lamp: it looks like something in orbit.
The idea
Direct and indirect light
A normal lamp points at you. Orfeo does not: the LED panel sits hidden behind the disc, facing the wall, and what lights up is the wall itself. The disc stays in shadow, lit from within by its own grain, with a halo around it.
That is exactly what an eclipse does. It is also the practical reason you can look straight at it without discomfort: there is no bright point in sight.
The materials
Eighteen planets
The same disc, eighteen materials. The grain of each one decides what map appears when it is lit, and none can be repeated because no stone and no piece of wood repeats itself.
