How to choose a table lamp
A table lamp is not chosen for how much it lights, but for where it is going to stand. The same piece that is perfect on a bedside table looks ridiculous on a console. It all comes down to proportion with the furniture and the height of the shade.
The right height
Sitting up in bed or in an armchair, the bottom edge of the shade should be at eye level. That way you see the light, not the bulb.
On a bedside table of 55–60 cm, that usually means a lamp 40–50 cm tall.
Proportion
The lamp should not exceed 1.5 times the height of the furniture it stands on, and the shade should not be wider than the furniture.
On a bedside table, leave room for a book and a glass: if the base takes up more than a third, it is too big.
Where to put it
Bedside table: light to read by without waking whoever is sleeping next to you. Better with a switch on the cable, within reach.
Desk: on the left if you are right-handed, so your hand does not cast a shadow.
Console or sideboard: here the lamp is decoration; it can be taller and more sculptural.
How much light
Reading needs around 400–500 lumens where the book rests; for ambient light, half of that is enough.
A closed shade directs the light onto the book; an open one spreads it around the room.
Colour temperature
In a bedroom, 2700 K or lower. Cool light late in the day delays sleep, and that is not a decorating opinion.
On a desk, 4000 K: it keeps you focused without tiring the eyes.
Before you buy
Check the cable length and where your socket is: short cables force you to put the lamp where you did not want it.
If it will be seen from both sides, choose a piece that is finished at the back.
